THE FIRST AND GREATEST COMMANDMENT

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 22:36–40

No one at that point had been able to prove Jesus wrong in anything. Even before He answered this question from “a lawyer of the Pharisees,” the crowd heard the other questions that Jesus had answered and they were astonished at his teaching (Matthew 22:33).

Knowing all the Jewish laws, and recognizing Jesus as a “teacher” who was able to answer all questions, the lawyer asked Jesus about the first law of the ten commandments ~ “to test Him.”

How is a person able to “love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind.” Impossible! ~ Yet it is the first commandment of the law of God’s kingdom. There is no entrance into, nor any residence in God’s kingdom without this love. Now, how is this love for God different than any other love? We seem to sometimes love another person more than anything else, but even then there may be times when we are unfaithful and fail to live up to their expectations. Our hearts, souls, and minds can fail us in loving another person. So how can we possibly love God with all our heart, soul, and mind?

One clue is that “the Lord” is referred to as “your God.” The Lord your God is associated with the relationship that we mentioned in our first section. The relationship that we mentioned concerning “our” Father in heaven is applicable here. If He is our Father, then He is our God.

We remember that Jesus’ teachings were meant primarily for His disciples, and He spoke to them privately, explaining the parables that the crowds had heard. As The Lord’s Prayer is spoken sincerely by God’s children to Him as our heavenly Father, so the commandments, though not understood by all people, are received from the Lord our God by His children. These commandments are impossible for anyone to obey. These are the commandments that Jesus came to fulfill on the part of those for whom He would die. This is the righteousness that He fulfilled for us, and because His righteousness was a light that exposed the darkness of man’s sin, He was arrested, tried, convicted, and crucified through the authority of those who thought they were righteous.

They knew the first and second commandments; they knew all of God’s written law, but not from a heart relationship with the heavenly Father who had issued these commandments generations before. Jesus’ teachings were meant for those who would receive a new heart and a new spirit from God, the Father. Ezekiel 36:26
